calvin and hobbes: with me more than ever

Posted by juplife on October 29, 2007

on our road trip to columbus last week, drew and i spent a good chunk of our time talking about our favorite comic strip, calvin and hobbes. i remember reading this comic everyday when i was a kid and still do everyday thanks to thanks to the internet. sadly, i gave my comic books to my high school teacher, mr smith. hopefully his kids enjoy them as much as i did.

i remember calvin and hobbes as a comic that brought me a lot of joy and made me smile everyday. i loved how calvin and his stuffed tiger went on these great adventures and had such great talks. throughout all of calvin’s strips he seems to wear a huge smile even when misbehaving. it’s made a huge impact on me to this day.

i learned quite a bit about the artistic value of calvin and hobbes through my talk with drew. bill watterson changed comic strips and fought hard for those changes. because of this, it was more than just a comic to many people.

recently i’ve run across quite a few references to calvin and hobbes in my daily readings. since it is so important to me i thought you might enjoy checking them out as well.

this first one, from progressiveboink.com, provides 25 great calvin and hobbes strips and some commentary on them. there are some great quotes in there and it reminded me of how smart those two were. to this day i find myself looking up the definition of words that a 6 year old kid used daily. 12 years later he’s still smarter than me.

i still don’t understand this one.

some of my favorite quotes from the strips on that progressive boink:

  • For a mom, sometimes she’s pretty cool.
  • You know what’s the rage this year? …Hats.
  • You don’t get to be a mom if you can’t fix everything.
  • You’ve taught me nothing except how to cynically manipulate the system.
  • Genius is never understood in it’s own time.

this second page has some additional watterson comics. there are a few calvin and hobbes on there but watterson actually did some political cartoons and magazine covers that you might find interesting.

calvin and hobbes is the best. enjoy.

Hi, i love Calvin & Hobbes.

Concerning the strip “you still don’t understand” (i fold): Look at Hobbes’ tail

    hahahaha it’s cute, no?

One of my favorite quotes (though there are so many… ;)
    Calvin:
Once you become informed, you start seeing complexities and shades of gray. You realize that nothing is as clear and simple as it first appears. Ultimatly, knowledge is paralyzing. Being a man of action, i can’t afford to take that risk.

thanks for the clarification on that one.

what book is that quote from? i’d love to read that sequence.
